Indian Muslim American Movement (IMAM) is a grassroots, nonpartisan, politically agnostic 501(c)(3) organization that educates the American public about issues affecting Muslims in India and Indian Muslim Americans in the United States, particularly those linked to threats to religious freedom and human rights. Grounded in the civic legacy of Indian Muslims, IMAM advances religious freedom as a fundamental human right and a core pillar of democratic resilience.
Through evidence based research, public education, leadership development, and lawful advocacy, IMAM raises awareness of hate, discrimination, and transnational extremism while strengthening inclusive civic participation—especially among youth.
Working in coalition with civil rights and human rights partners, IMAM promotes policies and public discourse that uphold pluralism, democratic norms, religious freedom, and the rule of law in both the United States and India.

The mission of IMAM is to safeguard and advance the constitutional and human rights of India’s minorities and marginalized communities through education, public awareness, research, and lawful advocacy.
In the United States, IMAM works to build a youth-forward, age-inclusive movement led by Indian Muslims that elevates public understanding of issues affecting the community, counters the impact of extremist and far-right ideologies on Muslim Americans and other vulnerable groups, and strengthens civic participation. Through this work, IMAM also seeks to preserve and uplift Indian Muslim identity, culture, and heritage while fostering broad-based, multiracial democratic engagement.
Our Vision
IMAM envisions inclusive and tolerant societies grounded in respect for human rights and the rule of law, where governments are accountable, democratic norms are upheld, and all individuals enjoy equal protection without discrimination based on religion, race, ethnicity, or caste.
In the United States, IMAM seeks to strengthen public awareness of the harms posed by exclusionary and extremist ideologies and to ensure that such movements are critically understood within policy, academic, and civic spaces. IMAM works toward a future in which Indian Muslim Americans are recognized as an engaged, civic-minded community contributing to the broader effort to uphold pluralism, democratic values, and multiracial inclusion.
Our Objectives
IMAM advances its mission through the following core strategies:
- Lawful Advocacy – Engage in advocacy activities fully consistent with Section 501(c)(3) regulations to protect religious freedom, human rights, and constitutional guarantees.
- Public Education and Civic Engagement – Develop educational resources, briefings, and community programs that increase public understanding of issues affecting Muslims in India and their diaspora communities, while promoting informed civic participation among Indian Americans.
- Research and Policy Education – Produce credible, evidence-based analysis that informs policymakers, media, and the public, and advances policy solutions that counter hate, protect religious freedom, and strengthen democratic and constitutional norms.
- Leadership Development – Train emerging leaders—especially youth—in civic literacy, community organizing, and public engagement to build long-term community capacity.
- Coalition and Stakeholder Engagement – Partner with elected representatives, think tanks, civil rights and human rights organizations, civil society groups, and media to elevate issues of concern and advance shared democratic values.
- Community Support and Cultural Programming – Preserve and uplift Indian Muslim identity, culture, and heritage while collaborating with legal advocates and community partners to help individuals facing discrimination or prejudice access appropriate resources and assistance.
